I secretly went to our country house without telling my husband to find out what he was doing there. When I opened the door, I was overwhelmed with real horror š±š±
My husband Mark and I have a small house in the countryside. We used to go there almost every weekendāplanting flowers, working in the garden, grilling meat, just relaxing away from the city noise.
But at some point, everything changed. Mark started constantly refusing to go. There was always an excuse: urgent work, exhaustion, a headache, āmaybe next time.ā At first, I didnāt think much of it.
Until one day our neighbor from the village called me.
āListen,ā she said casually, āI saw your husband near the house yesterday.ā
At first, I didnāt even understand what she meant.
āYou must be mistaken,ā I replied. āHe was at work all day.ā
āNo, Iām sure. He came out of the house and was carrying things from his car for quite a while,ā she said calmly.
I hung up, but inside everything tightened. Unpleasant thoughts flooded my mind. Why was he there and didnāt tell me? Why was he hiding his trips? And most importantlyāwhat was he doing there?
The next weekend, Mark again said he wasnāt going anywhere.
āMaybe Iāll go by myself then, just to get some fresh air,ā I suggested carefully.
He immediately tensed.
āNo,ā he said too quickly. āI donāt want you going there. Iāll feel better if you stay home.ā
And that was the moment I understood. If there was nothing strange happening, he wouldnāt forbid it. When Mark left the house, I decided to follow him. He got into his car and drove toward the village.
I waited a bit and drove after him.
As I approached the house, my heart was pounding. My hands were shaking. I felt like I was about to discover something terrible, but I couldnāt stop. I walked up to the door, took a deep breath, and went inside.
In that moment, I realized I was wrong to expect to find a mistress there. Because what I saw was far worse šØšØ
The house was filled with electronics. Brand-new TVs, laptops, tablets, cameras, tools still in their packaging. In the corners were bags containing jewelryāwatches, chains, earrings. On the table and in drawers were stacks of cash. There was so much that my legs nearly gave out.
It didnāt look like a hobby, a business, or casual storage. It looked like a warehouse.
I didnāt cause a scene. I decided to confront my husband directly. When Mark came back, I simply asked:
āExplain to me what all this is.ā
At first, he tried to joke it off. Then he said they were ātemporary itemsā and that I didnāt understand. But when I told him I had seen everything with my own eyes, he fell silent.
And then he told me the truth.
It turned out Mark had been fired almost two years earlier. He hadnāt told anyone. At first, he tried to find another job. Then he started taking out loans. And when the money ran out, he made a choice that changed everything.
For the past two years, he had been burglarizing houses. He picked empty properties, watched the owners, broke in at night, and took everything valuable. He sold some items right away and stored the rest in our country house to sell gradually without attracting attention.
I looked at the man I had been living with and didnāt recognize him. The house I believed was safe had become a storage space for stolen goods. The person I trusted had been living a double life, risking his freedom every single day.
In that moment, I realized something: I would rather he had a mistress. Because this truth was far more terrifying.
