Pope Francis passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88.<\/span> He died at 7:35 AM CEST at his residence in the Domus Sanctae Marthae within Vatican City.<\/span> The Vatican announced his death in a statement delivered by Cardinal Kevin Farrell.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pope Francis<\/a>\u00a0made his first public appearance since being discharged from the hospital two weeks ago after treatment for double pneumonia, entering St. Peter\u2019s Square at the Vatican in a wheelchair on Sunday to greet cheering crowds.<\/p>\n

Francis, 88, had been out of public view since March 23, when he had given a short greeting before leaving Rome\u2019s Gemelli hospital after more than five weeks of treatment in the most serious health crisis of his 12-year papacy.<\/p>\n

The pope, in a previously unannounced move, came out to the square shortly before noon at the end of the celebration of a Mass for the Catholic Church\u2019s Jubilee year.<\/p>\n

Coming in front of the main altar for the service in bright sunshine, Francis waved to the crowds before speaking briefly.<\/p>\n

\u201cHappy Sunday to everyone,\u201d the pope said, speaking in a frail voice while receiving oxygen via a small hose under his nose. \u201cThank you so much.\u201d<\/p>\n

The pope smiled broadly as he greeted crowds. His voice, though weak, sounded stronger than it had during the March 23 appearance, when he struggled to speak.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
