My cousin claimed she understood when I missed her wedding because of my dad\u2019s stroke. Then she sent me a bill for my \u201cempty seat.\u201d She wanted money but what she got was a reality check, delivered by one very fed-up guest.About six months before Caroline\u2019s wedding, I was genuinely excited. She and I had grown up close, not best-friend close, but close enough that I wanted to show up for her in a big way. I RSVP\u2019d as soon as the invite arrived, bought a gorgeous dress, helped plan the bridal shower, even booked time off work. I was all in.<\/p>\n

Then life decided to knock the wind out of me.A month before her big day, my father suffered a massive stroke. It was the most terrifying moment of my life. He survived, and I thank God for that every day, but he needed full-time care during his recovery.Rehab appointments, medications, help with eating, bathing, and everything else. I was the only family member nearby and available, so there was no option to leave him alone, not even for a weekend. So, with a heavy heart and tears threatening to spill, I sat down to write Caroline an email I never imagined I\u2019d have to send ever since I got her wedding invite. I took my time with it, not just because I wanted to be thoughtful, but because I genuinely cared.I explained everything, in detail. I told her about my dad\u2019s stroke, how sudden and frightening it had been, how I didn\u2019t know if he\u2019d make it through the night at first. I explained that while he had thankfully pulled through, he wasn\u2019t the same.<\/div>\n

He needed round-the-clock attention, and as the only one who could step up, I had to be there for him, no questions asked. I apologized over and over again and told her how heartbroken I was to miss her big day, how much I had been looking forward to it, not just the dress and the dancing, but celebrating her.<\/p>\n

Fast forward to a week after the wedding. I\u2019m sitting on the couch, finally catching my breath after a stressful month, when I get a mass email from Caroline. Not just to me \u2014 it was clearly sent to every single guest who RSVP\u2019d but didn\u2019t attend.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWe dropped $3,000 on empty seats, so if you RSVP\u2019d and bailed, we totally expect you to cover your share. We paid for you, now pay us back. Simple, right?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

At first, I thought it had to be some kind of prank. I re-read it three times. Surely she wasn\u2019t serious? But the tone was unmistakably hers, cheery with just enough passive aggression to make your blood boil.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cYeah, I said I understood at the time because I didn\u2019t want to cause drama before the wedding. But it\u2019s still money out of our pockets. You RSVP\u2019d, and we paid for you. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s crazy to ask for people to be accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t twist my words,\u201d she replied. \u201cI\u2019m just saying, if everyone made last-minute changes, we\u2019d be drowning in debt. We already had enough no-shows to ruin the budget.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I stared at my screen in disbelief. This wasn\u2019t a bridezilla moment, this was a full-blown entitled meltdown.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Then, just as I was debating whether to respond again, a mutual friend, Jenna, texted me.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Caroline had already received partial refunds for guests who canceled in advance, including me. She just wanted more cash.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The silence was immediate and deafening.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
